MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION CARBONDALE COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT 165, CARBONDALE, ILLINOIS HELD AUGUST 19, 2010

The regular meeting of the Board of Education of School District 165 was held in the cafeteria of Carbondale Community High School, 1301 East Walnut Street, Carbondale, Illinois, on Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 7:00 p.m.

Upon roll call, the following members were present: Kathy Booziotis, Kenneth Hughes, Robert Brewer, William Sherwood, Mike Durr, Francis Tsung and Linda Flowers. Also present were: Steven R. Sabens, Crystal Swan-Gravatt, Steve Kosco, CCHSEA Represented, Stephen Murphy and Barbara Levine. President Brewer declared a quorum present and the regular meeting of August 19, 2010 was called to order.

Minutes: The minutes of the regular rescheduled meeting of July 21, 2010 were approved as distributed.

Dr. Kevin Accola Media Release: The Board received a copy of the Dr. Kevin Accola Media Release advising them of his visit to address CCHS students on August 26, 2010.

Foundation Gala Weekend: Superintendent Sabens reminded everyone of the Foundation Gala Weekend activities August 27 and 28, 2010.

Payment of Bills: Motion by Durr seconded by Sherwood, to pay the remaining bills for the month of July, 2010; and, those available for payment for the month of August, 2010. Roll call: Booziotis, Brewer, Durr, Flowers, Hughes, Sherwood and Tsung voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried.

Awarding of Bids for Food and Cafeteria Supplies:Motion by Booziotis, seconded by Flowers, to acknowledge receipt of the bids received for food and cafeteria supplies; and to award the bids as presented in Mr. Kosco’s memo, for the period August 17, 2010 through December 17, 2010. Roll call: Brewer, Durr, Flowers, Hughes, Sherwood, Tsung and Booziotis voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried.

Presentation of the 2010-11 Tentative Budget for Public Display: Motion by Durr, seconded by Sherwood, to receive the tentative budget for the 2010-11 school year, place it on display for the public at the district office, the high school office, and the Carbondale Public Library, and to hold a public hearing on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.Roll call: Durr, Flowers, Hughes, Sherwood, Tsung, Booziotis and Brewer voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried.

Approval of August 2010 Graduates: Motion by Hughes, seconded by Booziotis, to approve the following students for August 19, 2010 graduation: Maria Fernanda Aguirre, Wendy Denise Greiving, Anderson Christine Ahne, Daniel Arthur Hoskins, Nandi Michelle Baker, Bobby Lee Klump III, Darius Marquis Beck, Rory Garin Palmer, Rehka Danielle Borner, Jacob Dale Parmly, Paige Ryan Bowring, Hanna N. Richey, Alexis Olivia Brown, Larry Dell Sarver, Brettan Lane Cooper, Billie Joe Sroka, Dakota Brooke Dodds, Ola Pearl Sutton, Katelyn Nicole Gaither, Angelique Chevez White, Craig Allen Gerler, Sarah Renee Williams, Anne Marie Gordon and Garett Michael Worthen. Roll call: Flowers, Hughes, Sherwood, Tsung, Booziotis, Brewer and Durr voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried.

CCHS District 165 FY10 Compensation Report: The Board received a copy of the CCHS District 165 FY10 Compensation Report for their review.

Employment of Superintendent: Motion by Durr, seconded by Sherwood, to employ Stephen Murphy as the Superintendent of Carbondale Community High School District 165 effective July 1, 2011, through June 30, 2014, per the terms contained in the employment contract as presented. Roll call: Hughes, Sherwood, Tsung, Booziotis, Brewer, Durr and Flowers voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried.

Member Flowers stated she believed CCHS was very fortunate to have a “home grown” candidate for the position of superintendent; stating that Mr. Murphy had been given assignments by the district dealing with Title I and NCLB that helped prepare him for a future position as a superintendent.Dr. Flowers advised that she hoped the district would offer current African American assistant principals similar opportunities to help prepare them for advancement.

President Brewer stated how “tough” it was when Superintendent Sabens announced his retirement; but how happy everyone was for him and his family, and the Board’s concern to find someone that would be able to fill his shoes when he was gone. Mr. Brewer stated the Board found that person in Steve Murphy.

Member Sherwood stated he could not be more pleased with the decision of the Board of employ Steve Murphy as superintendent.

Superintendent Sabens stated he was very pleased with the employment of Steve Murphy as superintendent and looked forward to assisting him in his new position. Mr. Sabens also recognized former Board of Education President, Barbara Levine, who was in the audience, thanking her for her service on the superintendent search committee.

Retirement: Motion by Sherwood, seconded by Booziotis, to approve the retirement of Marlin Nevill (maintenance technician) effective September 30, 2010. Roll call: Sherwood, Tsung, Booziotis, Brewer, Durr, Flowers and Hughes voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried.

Employments: Motion by Durr, seconded by Hughes, to approve the following action:

a. Rebound Grant Personnel--Adopt the Resolution Authorizing Employment of Rebound Personnel as presented contingent upon grant funding and student enrollment, with reduced hours during the months when evening classes are not in session and during the summer:

Extra-duty/Extended-time Personnel--Personnel: WYSE/Math Team: Gary Rodvelt (1/2 stipend) and Cindy Donoghue (1/2 stipend); Intramural Director: Connie Morgan (1/2 stipend) and Lori Koester (1/2 stipend); Assistant Football Coach: Patrick Tello ($1,107.00) and Corey Toenjes ($1,107.00); Assistant Volleyball Coach: Elhaum Mogharreban ($1,994.00) and Nicholas Ramsey ($1,994.00); Head Boys Track Coach: Carlton Smith.

Volunteer Coaches: Motion by Flowers, seconded by Durr, to approve volunteer coaches as presented: Volunteer Boys and Girls Tennis Coaches: Max Kuenneke and Tom Brooke; Volunteer Football Coach: Ryan Lott. Roll call: Booziotis, Brewer, Durr, Flowers, Hughes, Sherwood and Tsung voted yes. Nay, none. Motion carried.
